Media Tips & Talking Points for Members/Alumni

Talking to the media? Here's what you should know:

    ⭐Media Tips

    • Assume you're on the record—always.
Even casual comments (while being mic’d up or before/after interviews) can be used.
    • Even if you have a preexisting relationship and clear agreement, “off the record” is never guaranteed. It’s a risk, and once something is said, you can’t control how it’s used.
    • Clarify ground rules up front.
      Before anything starts, ask:
“Can we agree that anything I say before you start recording is off the record?”
“Please don’t use my name, location, or agency unless I confirm.”
    • Stick to your message.
Know your key points. Practice short, clear answers. Don’t ramble or speculate.
    • Use bridging if you’re caught off guard.
Redirect the question back to your message:
“I haven’t had time to consider that, but what I can share is…”
“That’s not my area, but what I’ve seen is…”
    • Avoid venting during setup or after the interview.
They may still be recording—even informally.
    • Ask to review your quotes.
It’s okay to request a fact-check or ask how you’ll be referenced. Some may say no, but it shows you're being thoughtful.
    • If unsure, pause.
      You can say:
      “I’m not comfortable answering that.”
“Can we go off the record for a moment?” (Just know it’s still not a guarantee.)

🎙️ 3 Main Talking Points & 1 Call to Action

    • “Our service mattered—even if the decision to end it didn’t reflect that.”

      1. We showed up for communities in crisis, gave everything we had, and were left without notice or next steps.

    • “We weren’t given time to plan. We were just told it was over.”

      1. Members across the country suddenly lost housing, income, and support with little warning.

    • “AmeriCorps gave us purpose and a pathway forward. That path was cut short—but we’re still showing up for each other.”

      1. The abrupt shutdown disrupted lives, but the spirit of service continues through the community itself.

AmeriCorps is a federal service program that engages more than 200,000 people each year in service to their communities. Members commit to addressing critical needs like education, disaster response, public health, and economic opportunity, often receiving a modest living stipend and an education award for their service. AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) is a full-time, team-based residential service program for young adults ages 18–26. Members travel to different locations across the country, supporting disaster recovery, environmental stewardship, and infrastructure improvement through hands-on service. In April 2025, AmeriCorps NCCC members—many serving through the FEMA Corps track—were notified that their service terms were ending early due to program-wide cuts. The decision, reportedly tied to funding constraints and programmatic reevaluation, left hundreds of members suddenly unemployed, with little time to plan for housing, income, or next steps. This site was created by alumni and supporters to help those impacted navigate the fallout—and remind them that they are not alone.

      You’re Not Alone

This is about more than jobs.
It’s about dignity, connection, and continuing to serve—even when the system fails us.

Thank you for showing up. Thank you for caring.
We see you. And we’re in this together.
